Earlier this month, police in Tokyo announced the creation of a drone squad to deal with the rise in personal drone use by members of the public.
According to the BBC, the unit’s main goal will be to patrol key government buildings, watching for “nuisance drones” involved in suspicious activity.
If one is spotted, the operator will be warned by loudspeaker before a net-equipped police drone is used to disable the nuisance drone. Members of the newly-formed squad showed off one of their drone catchers in a recent demonstration — check it out in the video below:
In April, a drone containing radiation landed on the roof of the prime minister’s office. The event didn’t end up causing any damages or injury, but it clearly left an impression on Tokyo police.
“Terrorist attacks using drones carrying explosives are a possibility,” a senior official in Tokyo PD’s security bureau told Japan’s Asahi Shimbun News. “We hope to defend the nation’s functions with the worst-case scenario in mind.”
